Nice post.
On a slight tangent, I know someone who lives in Japan, he bought a used Nissan Leaf three years ago for the equivalent of $13,500. He calculated that the cost of ownership compared to his previous car (Honda Fit/Jazz) meant the car would pay for itself in four and a half years. Also his range is holding up pretty well as the battery ages, but when it fades away too much, he'll still be ahead even if he has to replace it.
Obviously it's just an anecdote from a very different market, but it shows what's possible, and how close we are to affordable mass-ownership, and how depreciation can feed into that for used car buyers.
