There would never have been a Holden FX without substantial government subsidies. Right up until the end of Australian car manufacturing, it was dependent on government largesse. As they all shut down one by one, they begged for more government money, they couldn't live without it in these neo-liberal days of hardcore free market policies..
Now the government really needs to make sure Australia is not left behind by the transition to EVs. It would be interesting to see an inflation-adjusted comparison, but I wouldn't be surprised to see that the government handouts to the ICE industry have historically been HUGE compared to the modest dollars spent on the EV transition.
