Grid scale battery storage may not necessarily mean Lithium Ion batteries. We know the awesome South Australia battery is Tesla Lithium Ion (installed back when Elon was a rock star) which has helped stabilize the grid a few times now. I hope more Lithium Ion gets installed in the grid, but there are other options out there such as Flow batteries which consists of an electrolyte solution (currently Vanadium has been the preferred choice). The battery can be the size of a shipping container. The solution flows one way to charge and the other way when discharging with the big bonus being the vanadium doesn't degrade over time.
Also, our poles and wire distribution networks have been trialling community batteries which are being used to soak up the residential solar generation which is pushing up voltages during the day. These need to be much smaller in size and either located on the ground or up a pole so Lithium Ion makes sense in these situations.
