Of course you are right, my energy set-up was over $15,000 including a heat pump hot water system. I didn't bother with a ROI calculation, I guess it will take 10 years for me to recoup the money I would have paid in energy bills. It's asymptotic, which is not the same as free, it will never be free but as time goes on it gets closer.
I am personally interested in the concept of alternatives to money - bartering labour in the local community, using renewable natural resources, recycling, mutual aid, establishing commons, that sort of thing. But I don't really do much of it and it would be such an off topic derail that I will just agree with you that nothing is free.
