Price parity is interesting...
My current benchmark is to compare the Australian price of a BYD Dolphin with a Yaris. The Dolphin is actually slightly larger than a Yaris, but it's close enough. Currently we are on roughly $38K for the cheapest Dolphin and $34K for the most expensive Yaris. So by that scale we are not there yet. Others take a global view and look at the price in China, where I'm pretty sure the Dolphin is a clear winner.
I have heard the argument that Toyota is Japanese class and BYD is Chinese rubbish. Conversely, one could argue that an EV is intrinsically better than the corresponding ICE car, if only because of novelty and consumer desirability, a huge deal in car marketing. Also cost of ownership also gives EVs an edge, so equivalency is not so simple.
I think it's highly likely that BYD will drop the price of the Dolphin by, hmmm, maybe $4K in the coming months, and maybe by a similar amount a year after that. By then it IS simple, EVs will be cheaper.
