Do you remember - or you might not have been born - when Australia decided to remove the tariff for imported cars? There were many who opposed that. Their argument was that Australia couldn't afford to lose thousands of automotive workers (I was one of them, by the way!). And what could the workers who were mostly unskilled (and I was one of them) do if they lost their job?

But Australia did remove the tariff. And thousands of workers including me lost their job. What did they do then? They found a new job. I worked and studied for a degree. And cars became cheaper for everyone.

Now, I will assume the US situation is different from Australia that time. So perhaps putting up tariff is the best option for them. But Wolff argues it is not.
