Because it provides a buffer for the company to survive however long this "bear market" lasts it also does play a part in holding up the share price knowing that company won't go to bust, if it comes to shareholders they will use the funds for their own personal use.
Also if there's truly other distressed assets out there worth M&A it means we can do it.
