My guess is they want to accumulate cheaply, so they release reports of oversupply or would-be oversupply to create FUD. Then after many investors get caught in FUD, they start short selling to push the price down, which will scare those already caught in FUD to sell or/and scare to buy. And they buy the cheap shares. They are the only ones who are confident to buy in such a situation because they know the truth.
That may sound like a conspiracy theory - and may be it is, but logically they wouldn't release their reports for free if their reports were based on real data, would they? Surely they would only share those reports to their paying clients if those reports were based on real data.
They release their reports for free because they want to make people to feel FUD. Once people are caught in that trap, they wouldn't have the rationality ask a question such as yours:
"I just wonder how oversupply that is 'about to be unlocked' affects existing pricing?"
