Who said energy density doesn't matter ?? Even for BESS??
It does matter, not as crítical as for mobile applications. Now a days you get 5-6MWh BESS battery in a 20' container.
The limitation is the weight to move those containers.
Check the cost of land, foundations, DC copper wiring, cooling systems, BMS, Aux. Power supply... and yes energy density matters even for BESS.
Hence Sodium can be a swing technology when BEVs demand outcompetes the BESS.... but at current battery prices is not happening.
I'm paying BYD 100's of MWHs storage, based on LCE spot price published by BMI. Market is maturing, and BESS is expanding at lightning speed.
IMO for every 6MWh deployed on EVs battery, the grid will need 1 MWh of grid BESS ... and it will grow to may be 1 in 4, or even 1/2 MWh... of course there are many alternatives for BESS storage other than Li, but at industrial scale only Li is here.... very exciting times to witness and participate of this energy transition...
