"And what were the 3 biggest selling vehicles in Australia last year?
Utes.Ranger, Hilux, D-Max"
Strewth. Another one that is unable to comprehend the meaning of the numbers he reads - just like his tricky mate.
OK - here are the top 10 selling car models in 2023 (from https://www.racv.com.au/royalauto/transport/cars/australian-new-car-sales-2023.html)
Ford Ranger – 63,356
Toyota Hilux – 61,111
Isuzu Ute D-Max – 31,202
Toyota RAV4 – 29,627
MG ZS – 29,258
Tesla Model Y – 28,769
Toyota Landcruiser – 26,449
Mitsubishi Outlander – 24,263
Mazda CX-5 – 23,083
Hyundai Tucson – 21,224
Quote from same place: "2023 was the best ever year for vehicle sales in Australia, with a total of 1,216,780 vehicles"
The 10 listed above add up to 338,342.
I am not going to the trouble of finding the others, but I bet there are very few utes in the remaining 878,438.
I guess an interesting question is why are the most popular models utes? I would guess that because there is a much smaller range of utes to choose from, whereas sedans, sportscars, etc have a huge number of models.
However that is irrelevant - and whether utes are electrified or not is not all that significant.
By the way - apart from USA and Australia, the penetration of utes in most of the rest of the world is much lower. So, on a global scale utes are not that significant.
Also, I wonder if you missed this from the article you quoted:
"Let’s face facts, the future of motoring is electric – or at the very least, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and full-electric models will be much more commonplace over the next decade."
So, as O.C. might say - run along and play counting marbles.
