Actually, the data is VERY clear that EVs are 60 to 100 times LESS likely to burst into flames than an ICE vehicle.
Where the bad reputation was made, and there is a real issue, is that HYBRIDS are more likely to catch fire than either EVs or ICEs, and because they came out in numbers before EVs, and developed a reputation for bursting into flames as reliably as a Zippo lighter, people who don't pay attention tend to lump them together (as do the anti-EV crowd). While there are many positives to a hybrid, it has the same issues as an EV, viz-a-viz battery fires, AND it's got the same combustible fuel issues as an ICE. It's also true that the rate of hybrid fires has gone down in the past few years, because battery tech has improved a bit, but they still beat EVs and ICEs when it comes to catching fire.
