I don't think it's about "EV's". People just don't like change, especially when that change comes at a financial cost.
Additionally, for those who are car enthusiasts EV's are fairly unexciting. They are clinical, which just doesn't give you the same experience as a performance ICE vehicle. There is no two ways about it. Fast does not equal fun necessarily. To illustrate this point think about how much fun a Go-Kart is.
Secondly, there is an element of superiority and righteousness with EV's given there association with the green/progressive movement. So anything that shows that the claims of them being superior environmentally is going to be politicised.
