USMCA has specific rules for components and materials for import to US and Canada including 75% of materials in most restrictive sense, and 70% of steel and aluminium must be poured in North America. On top of that IRA content rules are another barrier on top of 100% tariffs that Trump has threatened to increase to 200% over the weekend.
So not sure BYD will be successful although they continue to issue press releases talking about sites Mexico where they plan to build a factory later this year.
Mexico is not the best jurisdiction for the Chinese. It nationalised its lithium reserves last year, and being the USA's largest trading partner, will be sensitive to additional penalties the Yanks are threatening on any "Chinese" EVs emanating from Mexico
