Nothing to do with April 1st.
It's true - and Queensland has volunteered to start a Pilot Trial "Drive on the Right Lane" on a limited number of dual-lane highways, yet to be named. The trial will be restricted to Mondays to Fridays, and mandate that all trucks and commercial vehicles drive on the right-hand lanes. The reason for this is that driver cabins in these larger vehicles are higher off the road and it won't make much of a difference whether the seats are actually on the inner or outer side of the driving direction. It was also thought that truck drivers are professional drivers who keep up with changing road rules and can therefore be relied upon to adjust their driving conscientiously to the new instructions.
An internal email circulating in the Department for Employment and Health - obtained under Freedom of Information Laws - calculated added economic benefits. The Trial would lead to Jobs and Growth in the automotive industry, boosting both new car sales and provide employment in repair workshops. It would also benefit insurance companies to raise competitive premiums, and provide additional employment in the Health and Hospitality sectors.
