Imagine this at the Middle Arm site - a manufacturing facility - maybe also a research facility so the other plants being planned around Australia have the benefit of new standards, safety regime, operational data, handling storage & transport rules.

The case for green hydrogen to be classed under advanced manufacturing and not the resource sector.
Unlike natural gas and iron ore, Australia doesn’t have a giant underground reserve of hydrogen ready to tap into and sell on the open market. We have to go and actually make it.
As we are making it, we should then view this as manufacturing and not resource extraction.
This simple distinction can change the whole way we view hydrogen going forward. Hydrogen is a product, it can be used to make other chemicals, such as ammonia & Hydrogen peroxide or it can be used as a battery for fuel cells. But hydrogen is only at the very start of its journey so we have a great opportunity to do it right from the get go.
Resource extraction has a considerable footprint and has a long established way of conducting business. Hydrogen manufacturing is also likely to have a considerable footprint if manufactured at an industrial scale. Unlike resource extraction, hydrogen can be manufactured pretty well anywhere meaning we need to give more thought to where we build this infrastructure for green energy.
At a smaller scale, hydrogen can even be manufactured in the suburbs and over time, for domestic use, this is likely to the be the most cost effective way to manufacture hydrogen. As we continue to explore hydrogen and discover more uses for our smallest and simplest element, it is likely to play an ever increasing role in our suburban factories of the future.
This is way the manufacturing of hydrogen is more a more important concept to explore then looking at hydrogen through our typical Western Australian resource extraction lens.Picture is the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field, at 10MW’s its currently the world’s largest green hydrogen manufacturing facility
