Fibre become obsolete to wireless? Sorry, but this is a load of rubbish. The problem is that many journalists like Mr McRann lack the IT knowledge and vision to have a clear picture of the real issues, and I suspect are sometimes arguing with a bit of self-interest.

The problem with wireless is there is only so much spectrum to go around, which is why the government is moving towards digital television. As soon as they can turn off analogue TV they have a lot more spectrum they can auction off, and Telstra will be one of the leading bidders. Wireless spectrum is a limited resource, which is why mobility solutions such as Next-G are much more expensive than true broadband.

Conversely, much of the fibre that is already installed around the country is still dark fibre (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_fibre), meaning that there is still much more capacity for information being carried along these lines. These fibre connections currently not only transmit fixed-line internet data for the entire country, but any wireless connections from the wireless hub onwards.

Ask yourself this. If Telstra doesn't believe that fibre is the future of Internet in Australia, why are they installing Fibre in greenfields housing estates around the country?
