The real problem is a lack of a coherent energy policy, including a lack of a price on carbon. You can't criticise the greenies for trying to pick winners (ie. Being too pro renewables) and farmers on the east coast wanting to protect farm land in one breathe and then promote coal in the next breath (just as ideological). Some sort of domestic reserve policy backed by a carbon price would protect domestic gas supply and allow the market, not politicians dependent on lobby dollars, to determine the best mix going forward. The current government needs to stop blaming everything on renewables and sensible protection of prime farmland and come up with some actual policies. Having said that Labor were just as bad with their gungho attitude to gas exports. Nonetheless the incompetence of our political class might benefit stx holders.
