Problem is, customer habits are already changing. ATM use is falling off dramatically. More and more retailers have POS terminals. Anywhere that an ATM can go, a retailer can provide payment facilities with contactless.
I think CBA and the others are just reacting to this fact. STL will be swept up in the general trend. There might be a little blip as banks retire ATMs or customers accidentally choose an STL ATM without realising there's a fee, but in the end the ATM business looks stuffed.
No wonder Indue sold.
