@Tapdancer; Anthony Albanese has indeed made a mess of marketing the referendum for official recognition of First Nations Peoples in the Constitution.
To begin with he placed his trust in Peter Dutton - now that was a stupid thing to do with someone whose record includes boycotting the National Apology to Stolen Generations and seeking to fast-track wealthy white South African farmers unhappy that apartheid is no longer in place.
IMO Albanese took way too long to progress legislation for the referendum through Parliament - incompetence or laziness? Same impact!
Albanese even headed overseas so often people lost the plot about the referendum altogether - many could be excused for thinking Albanese didn't really care about it so why should they.
Opinion polls are telling us the referendum is facing a heavy defeat, albeit there's been no spinoff in support for Dutton. People are deeply scarred by what the Coalition did from September 2013 to May 2022 and with Morrison and Abbott still around that's not changing anytime soon.
