Hi All,
Don't know how many of you have to work with nature as part of your job, but I do. I work in coal mines. One thing you need to learn very quickly is that things go wrong and you come up against the unexpected all the time. This is normal, not abnormal. A lot of people need to get a grip on reality, instead of their insulated lives in a city/behind a computer screen, where everything comes in a plastic package and if it doesn't work to plan first time around you get a refund.
Something else you need to learn is that the earth didn't come out of a quality controlled factory. Not only does it have various layers, bedding planes and stress directions, it also has faults. All this combined means that even short holes can close off overnight. It's rather interesting to look down a blast hole to find out that you now only have half a hole instead of the full one that got drilled. (The other half is there ok, but just offset from the top half!)
I am not an oil and gas engineer, nor do I pretend to be. However, I think that to start laying blame around the place because the packer won't go down is rather foolish. Remember, the gas is still there. It hasn't changed. The only question is whether or not our ability to quantify it has changed. I doubt very much that this is the first time in the oil and gas industry that a packer wouldn't go down the hole. If they've decided to set the packer in place and leave it where it is, then they I suspect they have a tentative plan going forward, which they are yet to fully flesh out and get approved. Hopefully, it won't take long to chart the path forward.
Good luck to all.
