Most of the plantations are environmental disasters.
The maximum number of trees are planted because yield is the goal not preservation of the land. Lots of these plantations are Gunns leasing land so that they can walk away from any responsibility once the harvest cycle is over.
By growing one species for many years what legacy do they leave? The practice of horizontal grading to trap water for the trees and the sheer number of thirsty trees has the effect of dramatically reducing the ground water levels for surrounding properties.
The intense monoculture using fast, high yield tree species, strips the nutrients from the soil.
Good farming land, a valuable resource for vegetables etc is now being used for it's ability to yield several wood pulp crops before it's rich fertility is impoverished.
The local people and local governments are scared of voicing their opposition to these practices because the company has a history of government support and intimidation for those that get in the way of their schemes.
Been there, seen it, spoken to the people.
