This week Timis is in Beijing for what he hopes are the final throes of three-month negotiations with one of China's three giant state-owned oil companies, China National Petroleum Corporation, better known as PetroChina. The plan is for CNPC to take a 20 per cent stake in the most promising oil well African Petroleum has drilled. Timis won't say how much he wants but market rumours are as much as $US2bn."

"Timis is in Beijing with mate and fellow Afrophile Tony Sage, executive chairman of ASX-listed Cape Lambert Resources.
*************
Timis's African Minerals owns a slice of the company and Sage is understood to also hold stakes in most of Timis's ventures. The two have been in business on and off since the 1980s.
"The Chinese are still very, very interested in dealing with Australian companies with assets overseas -- at the moment their minds are set against investing directly in Australia," Sage says. "China has some problems now with the Australian investment community: the mining tax, carbon tax. The difficulty in getting things done (multiple regulatory regimes is a common Chinese complaint)."
