I have been following the story of Palmer and his nickel mine in Townsville. For the past TWO YEARS, the Qld minster for the enviroment, Andrew Powell, has been conjoling Palmer to do remedial work on his tailings ponds, there. They wanted him to increase the capacity of them, so that in a cyclone etc they would not overflow, their extremely toxic contents into the Barrier Reef, opposite them. Palmer has ignored this 'request' and instead asked for a larger permit to be allowed to overflow these toxins, in times of heavy rain etc. Two long years have past and guess what?? It has just been announced today in the Australian, that Powell has in fact caved in and INCREASED the permit to allow MORE of these TOXINS to be pumped into the reef !!!! They gave him 2 years 'grace' to do this remedial work, to which he gave them the finger. Linc on the other hand, seem not to even had the courtesy of this minister to engage in converstation about our supposed 'enviormental damage' but instead, NO its straight to court for you vandals.
I am just left speechless by this department and their handling of these two cases!
