    Over a working life of forty odd years I've seen the best and the worst of the unions but there are always people who go troppo at the mere mention of the word 'union'. It's always been that way.
    As far as I can see, the unions are not perfect but we do need them.
    For example Bernie Banton parted company with the unions over 30 years ago but he now admits that in his fight with James Hardie the asbestos victims "would not have got a zack" had it not been for the ACTU's help.
    Furthermore he pointed out that under the Workchoices legislation unions can be fined for helping workers in a similar position. That this can be happening in Australia is disgrace.
