A commonwealth scientific body and a coal seam gas company have today announced a $14 million dollar joint research venture.
The Gas Industry Social and Environmental Research Alliance or GISERA is between the CSIRO and Australia Pacific LNG.
CSIRO's deputy chief of Ecosystem Sciences Dr Peter Stone says it'll draw scientific contributions from all across the country.
He says he hopes more of the industry's companies will come on board.
"The intention is to develop a multi-lateral relationship involving a much wider range of partners such as cooperative research centres, government departments, universities and developers."
"As well as representatives from agriculture and other industries and communities."
Dr Stone says while there are big opportunities in the coal seam gas industry there are also big challenges.
"Impacts on water and the environment, impacts on farms and food production and also the social and economic impacts on communities."
He says the research will come from staff all around Australia and will have a rigorous peer-review process.
