The federal government gave the task of creating robodebt demands to two private companies. Company employees created those claims based on an average three minute examination averaging income, and were awarded bonuses for claiming the most debt from welfare recipients.

One problem though. Creating a debt by averaging income, with no other check, is illegal. This has been known for at least two years. A recent full federal court case Shord v Commissioner of Taxation for the proposition that a breach of the relevant legislation may result in professional misconduct proceedings, contempt or criminal sanctions.

So the federal government has been sending out tens of thousands of illegal claims for money, knowing they're illegal.

In a civilised society people go to prison for that.

Source: I went and saw a lawyer about mine, was told I'm guilty until proven innocent and have to pay it
