I understand your disgust Dave, 20 years ago I would strongly agree. today though with threats increasing and calls from some qtrs for even bigger more destructive armaments this is likely only the start.

on the positive side Conroy is looking to manufacture the missiles in Aus. there are also a lot of other tech that will accompany this venture as drones are imo the way forward. the thing is with climate change effects becoming increasingly noticeable and various countries showing instability, Aus needs to be able to defend our enormous shorelines and seas.
