G'day stranger. Agreed in principle re the scientific efforts and credentials of the regulatory authorities empowered to make such assessments. However they report to ministers and ministers have govt agendas and it would be a brave soul who said ministers weren't influenced on occasions by lobbyists.
In the case of Qld I feel commonsense will prevail and UCG projects supported by strong scientific, environmental and commercial data will be approved.
In NSW my understanding is the Govt is caught between a rock and a hard place, being addiction to coal royalties and trying to privatise aging coal fired generation capacity ... they won't have the disipline to enforce that buyers phase in gas (or syngas) fired capacity. Instead, they will mandate any new generation capacity to be gas fired.
In Vic they have been nobbled for the past decade by privatisation of the 90's and not being able to enforce decommissioning of the dirtiest coal fired power stations on the planet (yes, the planet) and replacement with new cleaner gas fired stations. Of recent times they are fluffing around with very expensive surface gasification and coal drying projects and even geosequestration ... it would be great to see some political recognition of UCG in Vic.
