The US has a very serious unemployment problem at around 10%. With a population of about 285 million means there are more unemployed people in the US, then what there are Australians. Put's the problem into perspective doesn't it :)
The concept of transporting salt cake/slag via railway is feasible. I'm unsure of transport costs and there impact on profits, but I'm sure management have already crunched those number and it must be viable, otherwise it would not have been mentioned. Also, there musn't be any tranporting issue from a hazardous substance point of view.
