Surely you knew that pension phase super is tax free ,
Poor old enigma thought if spent all your super before you died , your heirs avoided tax if you died in poverty.
Therefore it made sense in his mind to potentially live his final years to avoid that possibility.
Quite right he was.
However , there are alternative strategies that don't require you to piss your super against the wall .

But I suppose if the extent of your ambition is to spend your final years living on the aged pension , so be it.
I think it would be better to live life to the full , spend what you need to have a good life , knowing that the aged pension is a back stop that you hope you never have to totally rely on.
