Australia's Environment Minister Peter Garrett Tuesday
announced approval for the Four Mile uranium mine in South Australia state, subject to
strict conditions that will ensure no credible risk to the environment.
As with all proposals examined under national environment law, the planned mine was
subject to a comprehensive, scientifically robust and transparent assessment process, he
said.
"Following this thorough assessment and careful consideration, I am certain this
operation poses no credible risk to the environment," and it will be subject to a
rigorous monitoring regime, he said in a statement.
Alliance Resources Ltd. (AGS.AU) holds a 25% stake in a joint venture with Quasar
Resources Pty Ltd., which owns 75% of the Four Mile project and which will operate the
mine. Quasar is an affiliate of Heathgate Resources Pty Ltd. that owns and operates the
existing Beverley uranium mine, 8 kilometers southeast of the Four Mile joint venture
area.
They plan to start production at Four Mile in January.
