The GST was introduced in an attempt to plug a portion of the holes left from the 'cash' economy and the myriad of tax loopholes available to anyone with substantial wealth and a good accountant. It's about a fair a tax as is possible to implement and it excludes food I believe.
Fact is life isn't fair, it never will be. If you've got two arms, two legs and a head on your shoulders, baring significant physical or mental issues, you are responsible for your own situation. If you want more than you've currently got, go out and earn it, don't just expect someone else to give it to you.
I can't stand this sense of entitlement that's permeating through this country. We've got it very very good here but it won't stay that way if we don't promote a culture of hard work, personal responsibility and savings.
Have a look over in Europe at what overly generous pensions and the like eventually do to a country. Without industry a country soon collapses, and industry requires captains. Incentivise captains with the rewards of success and watch them work their bums off creating taxes and jobs.
To begrudge those that create the wealth that creates the jobs that sustains our economy is incredibly shortsighted.
