Govt urges victim 'claim paedophile's compo'

The New South Wales Government is encouraging the victim of a convicted child sex offender to make a claim on compensation the paedophile won after being attacked in jail.

Convicted paedophile Peter Andrew Bujdoso was yesterday awarded $175,000 in damages after being assaulted in a Sydney jail.

NSW Justice Minister Tony Kelly says he is disappointed and is considering appeal options.

Last year the Government introduced new legislation allowing victims to access any money awarded to criminals injured while behind bars.

Mr Kelly says the new law entitles the victim to a slice of Bujdoso's money.

"That money is now frozen for six months to allow the victims of the paedophile to be able to claim that full $175,000," he said.

He says the Department of Corrective services will write to the victim explaining the situation.

"The Department now will be contacting the victims to advise them of their opportunity to make a claim on that money through the courts," he said.

Mr Kelly says the victim received only $14,000 compensation when Bujdoso pleaded guilty to the sexual assault.
