seamisty, this incident is indeed a serious failure, mainly in the staff not calling an ambulance immediately or notifying the family soon after. However, should we require child care centres to conduct a full daily pat-down of kids and full inspection of their packs? And how long does it take a child to grab that pill and pop it in his/her mouth? 3 seconds? 5 seconds? What level of micro-monitoring is reasonable at a child care centre (or at home, for that matter)? Parents have responsibility to ensure their children don't have access to drugs or other dangerous items in the first place.
Meanwhile, G8 centres tend to get good ratings and there is apparently strong demand for places because of their popularity. This evidence was reported on this forum some time ago, relying on data and comments of the popular OZ childcare forum. You might want to scan it yourself to get a more representative picture of how parents view G8 centres.
