You will be exposed to the most critical issues facing the industry and gain understanding on likely directions in the next few years.
Damian Barrett , Gas Industry Social and Environmental Research Alliance
Professor Damian Barrett has more than 20 years research experience. Currently he is leading CSIRO’s research in unconventional gas and he is also the Director of GISERA, the Gas Industry Social and Environmental Research Alliance (GISERA). GISERA is a vehicle initiated by Australia Pacific LNG and CSIRO to foster collaborative public good research into the social and environmental challenges and opportunities associated with Australia’s growing gas industry. His current research interests include: integrated research into assessing environmental impacts and trade-offs associated with land, water and mining in landscapes, environmental biophysical modelling of energy, carbon, water and nutrient fluxes in landscapes and physical hydrology, ecosystem services and sustainable development.
Saji Joseph, Department of Natural Resources and Mines- Qld
Saji is the Director of Strategic Water Programs for the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines. He is accountable for developing strategic policies and programs related to surface and groundwater resources delivering responsible and productive water resource management outcomes within the state. Saji possesses 26 years’ experience in development and implementation of natural resource policies and plans and science in Australia and abroad enabling the sustainable management of water.
Nicola Fry, AGL Energy
Nicola is a Sydney based hydrogeologist and has been working at AGL Energy on their eastern Australian coal seam gas projects for the past two years. She holds an Honours degree in geology and chemistry from the ANU and a Master's in engineering studies, majoring in hydrogeology and groundwater management, from the UTS and is currently studying a Master's of Science Communication through the ANU. Prior to her current role, Nicola spent 2 years on development aid projects in the small island developing state of Tonga. During her time in Tonga, Nicola worked with the local government developing water policy, collecting and communicating water quality data, and capacity building the local staff. Her role was supported by AusAID and the Fijian based SOPAC. Previously, Nicola was based in Canberra at FrOG Tech for 5 years working as a geologist on oil and gas projects around the globe.
David Free, Department of Natural Resources and Mines- Qld
David is the Chief Hydrogeologist with DNRM and has some 40 years’ experience undertaking groundwater investigations, assessment and management across most aquifer types in Queensland with a strong emphasis in the Great Artesian Basin (**). David was part of the team that developed the ** Water Resource Plan (WRP) and Resource Operations Plan (ROP). In recent years David has concentrated on the policy and operational aspect of potential impacts that the CSG industry may have on groundwater resources and landholder water bores and now heads up the Groundwater Investigation and Assessment Team within the CSG Compliance Unit based in Toowoomba.
Keith Phillipson, Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment
Keith is a Director of Technical Projects with the Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment (OGIA), Department of Natural Resources and Mines. He has over 20 years experience as a consultant hydrogeologist specialising in the development of regional scale groundwater flow models. Keith is currently leading development of a revised groundwater flow model of the Surat CMA which OGIA will use to refine the predicted impact of Coal Seam Gas development in this area. He was also part of a collaborative private and public sector team which developed the current ‘first generation’ Surat CMA model.
Ryan Morris, Origin Energy
Ryan was a consultant for ten years, where his technical interests included water supply, deep bores and mine water management. He accepted an industry position with Origin Energy after working on the groundwater aspects of Australia Pacific LNG project EIS. During the past four years at Origin, he has been involved with the design and implementation of a regional groundwater monitoring network with over 180 bores, springs assessments, subsidence assessment and monitoring, construction water supply, landholder bore and make good assessments, State and Federal regulatory approvals and aquifer injection. Ryan has been responsible for the delivery of an aquifer injection trial program across four different sites and nine injection targets. Two of the trials have progressed to operational treated CSG water injection schemes with a combined injection capacity of 45ML/day.
Randall Cox, Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment (OGIA) QLD
Randall is a hydrogeologist with extensive experience in groundwater management and water resources policy. Randall is the General Manager of the Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment (OGIA) in Queensland. OGIA assesses the cumulative impact of water extraction by coal seam gas operators on groundwater resources in the Surat Basin, develops integrated groundwater management arrangements and assigns implementation responsibilities to individual operators.
George Gates (PSM), CSG and Groundwater Consultant
George has just stepped down as Director of Water Management Implementation in the NSW Office of Water, responsible for surface and groundwater management. George recently accepted a position on the Gateway Panel, the body responsible for the expert assessment of State-significant mining and coal seam gas proposals located on strategic agricultural land. George has worked mostly for government in his 40 years as a hydrogeologist. He has extensive experience in groundwater exploration and management. He has been writing groundwater policy for the NSW government for the last ten years, a period of significant water reform. George's special interests are protecting groundwater from pollution, conjunctive groundwater/surface water management and setting sustainable diversion limits.
