Health Minister Tony Abbott is meeting pharmaceutical industry representatives in Sydney today about the planned changes, which will reportedly save taxpayers $1 billion.

The changes aimed to steer patients towards cheaper generic drugs, a financial newspaper reported.

Under the plan, the Government would cut the amount it pays for subsidised medicines once new copycat drugs came on to the market.
