Our manufacturing industries for the most part were long ago rendered uncompetitive and have disappeared. Now we see much of our agriculture going the same way. We watch so many of our iconic companies being taken over. I hate to see our country being flogged off to foreign interests and I sense that one day in the not-too-distant future we'll find we are virtual slaves in our own land. So, re-introducing trade barriers has a certain appeal.

However, I think that reintroducing trade barriers (protectionism) is unlikely to be the answer. I think that if countries return to that model, warfare will soon follow. As Bastiat wrote: "When goods don't cross borders, armies do."

But, what the heck ... I reckon our global leaders will probably take us into war anyway, rather than accept responsibility for the economic mess they've got us into and make the very hard decisions that would be necessary to get us out of it.
