The illegal mining scandal in Indonesia is unfolding. Here's an english translation

The tin corruption case at PT Timah — Full article

    Key points:

The corruption case in the tin commodity trading system at PT Timah has rocked Indonesia with revelations of the scale of fraud reaching hundreds of trillions of rupiah.

This case has revealed a pattern of cooperation that is detrimental to the state between PT Timah and several tin smelter companies involving several puppet companies owned by the tin barons.

This case is a warning for the government and law enforcement agencies to be stricter in monitoring corrupt practices in the commodities sector, especially in industries that have a large economic impact on the country, such as the tin industry.

Only with firm and fair law enforcement can we create a country that is free from corruption and provide justice for all Indonesian people.

OG Tin Baron (see X account) asks: How does the state owned PT Timah tin miner recover from such a humiliating public examination of its ‘allegedly’ corrupt practises? How does the Indonesian tin market recover?

The longer-term threat is of future supply disruption as resource nationalism drives both governments further down the road of export controls. Tin's use as a circuit-board solder makes it a critical mineral both for the current generation of electronics and the coming internet of things. Yet it is one with an incredibly fragile supply chain, beholden to the politics of Indonesia and the Wa State Army.

Furthermore, our Resource Minister, Madeleine King (MK) has just returned from a US and Canada trip. Speaking on the ABC am program yesterday, pointed out that the Export-Import Bank of the United States operates in a similar manner as our Export Finance Australia, but with far larger resources and hence more power. Thus, it seems that MK is hoping that this Bank will increase US interest in our market, especially for critical minerals. I'm sure SRZ has had plenty of US interests in the past. So, this maybe renewed as a result.

SRZ is fortunate to be an entirely Australian in-country and Australian-owned project. When it comes to the US which has Tin as its number one most vulnerable metal for supply in the global 'electrification-of everything' thematic, this will be critical if we are to benefit.

We are valuable allies in the growth of our critical minerals development.
