Yes, you have to want to quit, but, in my case, wanting was not enough so I hit on the idea that I'd put on one side, in a separate bank account, daily, the amount that I would have spent smoking. In practice, I probably went to the bank once a week or so, but I did take from my pocket each day the smoking money not spent.
Well, after a long while, about a year, I'd saved up close to eight hundred pounds. I then hit upon another idea . . I went down to the bank, withdrew 525 pounds and put it all on Jim Joel's Fairy Footsteps to win the 1000 Guineas (1981) 500 on the horse and 25 betting tax, as it was then. Well, the gallant animal obliged at the generous odds of 6/4, so I had 1250 pounds in hand plus the balance still in the bank, which I withdrew and put the lot into ERNIE Bonds which have been sending me small winnings from time to time ever since.
I still chuckle about it and enjoy the memory and the better health that it brought.
So my message is, don't just quit, treat yourself with the savings.
    B22.
