''GAS producer and explorer Beach Energy has found a shale gas well it believes will place it among to the top tier of Australian energy producers.

Its shares climbed 5.3 per cent to 99c yesterday as it announced its Holdfast-1 well in the Cooper Basin had produced a steady gas flow of 1.8 million cubic feet per day.

Managing director Reg Nelson said the discovery dwarfed other potential resources in the area, indicating gas in place of between 60-130 trillion cubic feet, 10 to 15 per cent of which could be extracted.

Moomba has produced only six trillion cubic feet in its 40 years of operation, Mr Nelson said.''
