With the ore being worth up to $20,000 per cubic metre the depth is irrelevant, the capex of a 700m shaft is going to be some $10-20 million and the opex per ton is going to be trivial compared to the value of the ore , over at nifty they are digging ore worth not much more than $100-200 per cubic metre out the ground in a 1000 metre deep underground mine, Telfer is also more than 1000m underground on soso grades and in South africa they mine more than 3000 metres underground chasing veins less than 50cm thick with less than 10g per ton ,

I suspect that rio have hit something similar to greatland and even on one intercept you know with those grades you will be mining for sure just a question of how big a mine you need, hence the airstrip going in already, once rio have finished the land grab they will want to reveal their hand, I am sure there is going to be major development in the region,
