It's hard to see (under current circumstances) the alternative to gold as the global repository of value considering the tons of panic-printed paper that is funding deficit spending across the planet.

And regarding deficit spending, the US Fed Govt, in the next decade, is on target to a whopping $9 trillion deficit.

The US is heading slowly but surely towards the raising of taxes - a VAT / GST?
