Instead of calling the Greeks lazy and self indulgent I think we should instead be saying "But for the grace of God their go I". Never let it be forgotten that the GFC coincided with the biggest resources boom in history and hence cushioned the blow for us.......

........but the boom is over. Because I trade markets for a living I look at charts each morning and each morning since 2011 I have shaken my head in dismay as I look at the charts for coal and iron ore and see that the price has inched down even further. These were the staples that have kept us afloat. A year ago Joe Hockey decided to take the bull by the horns and bring down a tough budget. Better that we take a little bit of tough medicine now than end up like Greece in 10 years time.....and how is that working for him?? Did you ever see a governments popularity plummet so dramatically in the polls?? We could accuse the government of being weak for doing a big about face in the latest budget except it should be remembered that our form of government is democracy which, by definition, is government by the people. Therefore it is the job of the government to listen to and reflect the wishes of the people. And there in lies a fundamental flaw in democracy. People usually look for simple solutions to difficult problems and they always want something for nothing. It grieves me that whilst I might look at the price of iron ore and coal each morning my vote is worth no more than the stereotypical male who lives for the weekend when he can crush beer cans on his forehead and watch da footy or the stereo typical woman who is more interested in whether this dress makes my bum look fat or what the woman next door is doing. They have no care for what iron ore or coal is doing or how that might effect the national debt. They just know that things were better 7 or 8 years ago and if the government doesn't make it good like it was back then, then we will just get a new government. If you doubt what I say then just ask Campbell Newman about the price of doing the right thing when the right thing is the hard thing.

For the record I don't want to be seen as necessarily supporting one side of politics or the other but rather just whatever government is prepared to have a go at doing the hard yards.
