Rank outsiders Greece have been crowned European champions for the first time after beating hosts Portugal 1-0 in the final of Euro 2004 in Lisbon this morning.
The win sparked scenes of jubilation among thousands of Greece fans gathered in Melbourne city centre and in Greek communities around Australia.
Greece, 80-1 outsiders when the tournament began three weeks ago, (I know people who got odds of 101/1....) won thanks to a 57th minute headed goal from Angelos Haristeas off their first corner of the match.
Portugal had the majority of the possession but failed to break down the well-marshalled Greek defence.
Greece beat Portugal 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament and also defeated champions France in the quarter-final thanks to a Haristeas goal.
