Protesters celebrate court result

FIVE of the six charges against two Knitting Nannas Against Gas protesters at Metgasco’s former Doubtful Creek test drilling site were dismissed yesterday.
Clare Twomey and Naomi Tarrant appeared in Casino Local Court, both facing single charges of hindering police, entering a forestry area in contravention of a displayed notice, and failing to leave a forestry area.
The charges related to the women’s actions at the Doubtful Creek anti-CSG protest on February 7.
About 20 supporters who packed the small court broke into celebrations as Magistrate Jeff Linden handed down his verdicts.
All charges against Ms Twomey were dismissed.
Ms Tarrant pleaded guilty to hindering police and was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond. Her other two charges were dismissed.
After her court appearance, Ms Twomey said the court result reaffirmed their protest action was justified.
"I think it was a very good learning curve for people involved in non-violent direct action," Ms Twomey said.
