My honest opinion is we were very lucky - and whats happened to you guys is a big wake up call for us. Im in our local CFS and we have had over the past few years a bit cash thrown at us - as have many other brigades. But that doesnt answer your question.
The Police stuff Im not so sure about - and when Rann comes out and claims it as his big success I know its not true.
I think there are lot of houses being build in a grey zone between urban and rural that are simply not defendable no matter how well organised you are - which the majority of people (myself included most of the time) are not. Our planning laws might have the edge on you guys a bit but its not by much - same pressures for semi rural bush living.
I hope we all learn the lessons - I fear we will too quickly forget them - just as we all did after the 83 fires. It good to ask the question mate for sure but in my mind its there by the grace of god go us.
