The four CSG wells within a 5km radius of the river were cased, and not in production, and there were no CSG pipelines nearby, the minister said.

Origin spokesman Ken Horton said the company's four nearby wells were cased in cement, and had never been put into production.

Tests had shown they were not leaking gas, nor had there been any fracking associated with those wells, he said.

“It is our understanding that natural gas seepage in this area is not an uncommon occurrence and there's anecdotal evidence to indicate this isn't the first time seepage has been observed,” he said.
