Senator Waters comments are drawn from basic research that shows the way a child is socialised in their early life influences how they see themselves, their abilities, and hence is a predictor of their later career choices. Gender inequality remains an important challenge for modern day society, one that we seem unable to overcome. Senator Waters is advocating at community level for challenging restrictive stereotypes.

The fact that women do not have equality in Australia has been well established, and consistently reported on. I wonder why men are valued so much more than women in this country; why they are offered more promotions, why do they occupy more senior management positions, why are men paid more when occupying equivalent roles to women?

Gender inequality is a cultural artefact; it starts with early gender role socialisation. Sure our society is considered progressive in comparison to many others, but as per the above reviews and countless other reports.... we still have a long way to go to achieve gender equality.
