As I’ve been a professional fisherman for most of my life and I’m all for sustainable harvesting of natural resources.
The Pygmy Sperm Whale that I rescued from certain death was trying to find its offspring which had washed up a few kilometres to the north and I couldn’t just leave it there to die.
As for the Humpback’s if I was offered a small quota I would grab it as the population of these creatures have exploded over the past 30 years and the population is no longer in danger of extinction.
Back in the 70’s we would be lucky to see 10 or so in June but now we can see 30-40 in a day and quite often have pods of them following the boat for hours on end. I think the females use the cray boats as a shield against the amorous males.
