Interesting comment "why is a gap filled". I concurr the gap materialises from an extraordinary event news or otherwise and a reaction starts - trading houses talk - pre mkt orders loaded - Mkt opens and away it goes either free fall or take the elevator ride up.

The fill comes in from the contrarians view intraday or scapling for a better price and some older orders start to fill - then mums and dads buy or sell from the news but generaly this would be near the end and then the pressure stays with the heavy trader and their original direction - rope a dope or take a bath.
